Sphere Series

Sphere or Yin-Yang?

Picture
Violet Yin-Yang, 35"h x 35"w
The newest in the Sphere series, Violet Yin-Yang, left, builds on concepts from the rest of the series that represents 3-d spheres.  Perhaps this, and the preceding piece, Yin-Yang, are really spin-offs into a new series.  Only time will tell...

YinYang was the first piece to veer off the Sphere path.  Instead of representing a sphere, with its convex shape, this work seeks to portray a "saddle" with more of a convex shape, all created through use of the fibers' values.

Spheres

Fireball is made from over 3,000 1 1/8" fabric circles of fabric in eight values of Joy Press's hand-dyed orange and yellow gradation fabrics.  Each circle was stitched on to a background fabric and thread-painted to just the right color and value to create a 3d effect.

When complete, that sphere was added to a black background and batting and a backing were added.  Then, free-motion quilting in many different colors of solid, variegated, and iridescent thread was added over the sphere and Sliver and Holoshimmer thread was added on the background to complete the design.

Landscape Series

Sunset Reflection, 36"h x111"w

Sunset Reflection, a triptych, began as three or four design lines on a page.  The rest was created iteratively, with a few large, and many hundreds of small pieces of fabric, applied piece by piece, layer after layer, almost as painted brushstrokes, using over 30 different types of threads to create the design.

Hundreds of narrow strips of fabric and ribbons were used, almost as strokes of a paintbrush, to bring texture and color to this sunset reflection.
Creating dimension, Candice used a  wide-wale fabric for the palm tree trunks, and connected the palm fronds (leaves) only at the spines, allowing the fronds to move with a passing breeze.
Extensive thread-painting with over 30 threads, including variegated, metallic, and iridescent.
